Bert van den Berg: "Metaphysical Chaos and Social Disorder: The (Neo)platonic Interpretation of Hesiod's Poetry"

Vortragsreihe "CHAOS - Zusammenbrüche der Ordnung in vormodernen Kulturen"

09.11.2015 um 18:00 Uhr

The Neoplatonist Proclus (410-485 CE), arguably one of the most important philosophers of late antiquity, was a devout pagan. He experienced the triumph of Christianity as a collapse of traditional Greek culture, as represented, for example, by the poet Hesiod. In my talk, I shall discuss how he tried to make sense of the chaotic times he found himself living in. First, I shall analyse his metaphysical interpretation of the god Chaos in Hesiod's Theogony. Next, I shall examine how he uses the famous myth of Pandora in Hesiod's Works and Days to account for the occurrence of social disorder.
